Career path

Bookkeeper

Bookkeepers keep the day-to-day financial records of a business accurate and up to date — the foundation everything else in finance is built on. It is an accessible, in-demand and often flexible career.

What the work involves

The core tasks are recording transactions, reconciling bank accounts, managing invoices and receipts, processing payroll and preparing records for the accountant. Modern bookkeeping is largely done in cloud software, so a good deal of the skill is in keeping data clean and catching errors before they snowball.

Skills and qualifications

You need accuracy, consistency and comfort with accounting software (Xero, QuickBooks and similar). A formal qualification such as an AAT bookkeeping certificate signals competence and is achievable without a degree. Strong organisation and a methodical temperament matter more than advanced maths.

Switching in and going solo

Many people enter from admin, office management or retail, where they already handle money and records. Bookkeeping is also a popular route to self-employment, building a roster of small-business clients.

  • Earn a recognised bookkeeping certificate
  • Get certified in a major cloud accounting platform
  • Decide between employed roles and building your own client base

Frequently asked questions

Is bookkeeping a good route into accounting?

Yes. Bookkeeping gives you hands-on understanding of how a business's finances actually flow, which is an excellent foundation if you later choose to qualify as an accountant.
